PRINCEVILLE—Karen Miranda freaked out when she saw a meme based on her recent visit to Foodland on Kuhio Highway. "Who created this?!" she screamed to her husband while waiting on hold for the manager at Target.
"I was waiting to share about my recent, horrible experience at Target," said Miranda, "so I was scrolling through my Facebook. And there I saw it! Someone created a meme of me at the return counter."
It didn't take long for the meme to become viral locally and across the state. Worried about her reputation, Miranda called 9-1-1. "When the operator asked if the call was for fire, police or medical, I asked to talk to the police. Well, I asked for the police manager."
And then her call to 9-1-1 became a meme.
"My first response was to say 'Ok Karen'," said Richard Egli, president of the island's "Richards, Not Dicks" group, a support network for old guys named Richard. "My buddies and I have been called Dicks for as long as I can remember, so calm down."
Egli said if Miranda doesn't want to be the subject of memes, she should change her first name or re-style her hair. "Or start a support group like ours," he said.
