HILO—With two federal convictions for embezzlement and for offering a bribe, Stacy Higa believes his chances for being elected to a state office are better than ever.
"I thought I would do better in the (County of Hawaii) mayoral race in 2020," said Higa from prison, "but I guess I wasn't corrupt enough to win the hearts of the voters."
Higa in February 2022 was sentenced to 46 months, and while that may be considered a setback for some, he claims the timing will be perfect for a 2026 run.
"With less than a four-year sentence," said Higa, "I'll have enough time after prison to shake the hands of the few people who determine who will win, including special interests, contractors and that guy that runs the legislature. If I had been charged with only one crime, I would have to serve on the HART board for a couple of years to show the people of Hawaii that I'm fully committed to corruption."
